Sankofa Step Team

(Arts/Performance) Sankofa is Williams College's step team, completely student run since its founding in 1996. Stepping is a powerful, percussive form of dance brought into being by black fraternities in the mid-1900s. It is heavily influenced both by hip-hop and by traditional West African dance. In fact, the word Sankofa loosely translates to reaching back in order to step forward, and reflects the organization's mentality of drawing upon West African roots to create fresh, fly, tight urban dance. Sankofa has been known to incorporate everything from pop music and spoken word to break dance and gymnastics in its completely original choreography, making for loud, high energy, and incredibly exciting performances.
