The Williams College Department of Music presents the Williams Student Symphony on Saturday, Dec. 10 at 8:00 p.m. in Thompson Memorial Chapel on the Williams campus. This free event is open to the public.

A unique student orchestra, the Williams College Student Symphony is a 50-member group conducted and administered by students, with sponsorship by the music department. In keeping with a tradition of inspired programming, the orchestra presents a concert titled Bach and the Blues and co-conducted by three students, Dan Kohane ’12, Sato Matsui ’14, and Casey McLellan ’14. The evening promises a wide variety of styles.

Included on the program is the Double Concerto for Oboe and Violin in D Minor BWV 1060 by J.S. Bach, as well as a work by the Finnish master Jean Sibelius: Canzonetta from Kuolema, op. 62a. An active performer, conductor, and composer, Dan Kohane presents his work, Me and the Devil: A Blues Oratorio. Finally, in a wry nod to all the composers who left behind works unfinished, the orchestra plays P.D.Q. Bach’s The Unbegun Symphony, movement IV Andante — Allegro, a piece that was ended but never begun. This humorous aside is Peter Schickele’s loving and zany take on classical music. Schickle/PDQ belongs in a sub-genre of classical music that makes serious music smile.
