The Williams Jazz Repertory Ensemble devotes itself to the study and presentation of significant composers and movements in jazz history.
The Music of James Williams. The Williams Jazz Repertory Ensemble presents a program of compositions by one of the most influential jazz pianists and composers to emerge at the end of the 20th century, James Williams.
Part of a venerable lineage of Memphis-born pianists, Williams came to prominence as a member of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers in the early 1980s, and would become one of the eras notable bandleaders and educators. The program also includes pieces by Williams’ contemporaries Donald Brown, Pamela Watson and Alan Pasqua, as well as a piece by his protege Geoff Keezer.
