Williams Chamber Players present their fourth performance of the season.

The concert begins with a piece for solo violin, played by Joana Genova, composed by Reena Esmail – When the Violin. Originally composed for choir and cello, this version was adapted for unaccompanied violin by the composer. It is based on the Hindustani raga “Charukeshi”.  Joana Genova is then joined on stage by her colleague Elizabeth Wright, piano, and together they perform Three Pieces for Violin and Piano, op. 40 by Amy Beach: La Captive, Berceuse, and Mazurka.

A work played by Julian Müller, cello, and Matthew Gold, vibraphone, provides an intriguing combination of seldom paired instruments as they present Light and Water by Linda Catlin Smith.

T’filah (Prayer) by Lera Auerbach  is a piece for solo violin performed by Joanna Kurkowicz, violin. Next, joined by her colleagues Julian Müller, cello, and pianist Doris Stevenson, the trio present a piece by Shulamit Ran – Soliloquy for violin, cello and piano.

The program closes with a dedication to a famous member of the Class of 1950: Stephen Sondheim, as played by two members of the Williams piano faculty – Elizabeth Wright and Doris Stevenson. They present Sondheim’s Concertino for Two Pianos.

Williams Chamber Players

The Williams Chamber Players is a faculty chamber ensemble that presents concerts for the college and community throughout the academic year. Repertoire for concerts is drawn from the standard chamber music with special attention to music of the 20th and 21st centuries, and to music by Williams composers. Musicians are normally drawn from the ranks of artists in residence, artist associates, and other faculty members and visiting artists at Williams.

The general public is welcome to events in the Bernhard Music Center!  Members of the public should wear masks and show proof of full vaccination including a booster, if eligible. Williams students, faculty, and staff only need to show Williams IDs at the door.
