The al-Assad family has governed Syria since 1971. In December, 2024 the Syrian government was overthrown by opposition forces. The speed and the timing came as a great surprise as well as how peaceful this transition was. In this lunchtime talk, Professors Jeddeeni (Arabic Studies) and Magnús Bernhardsson (History and Global Studies), will reflect on these paradigm shifting developments and consider what this may mean for Syria and the Middle East.
