Abstract:  Inspired by the upcoming presidential election, this talk will look at a mathematical survey of voting systems and their applications. With special attention to plurality, ranked-choice voting, and sequential pairwise voting systems, this talk will demonstrate each one’s failure to satisfy major social welfare criteria through breaking Arrow’s Impossibility Theorem.
