Volunteer for Stockbridge-Munsee Mohican Historic Preservation Office Archaeological Excavation

The Stockbridge-Munsee Community’s Historic Preservation Office is recruiting volunteers for an archaeological investigation of the 1783 Ox Roast site in Stockbridge, MA, 55 minutes from Williamstown, from Monday, August 9, until Friday, August 13 (Project may finish earlier than Friday depending on findings).  To volunteer, all you will need is some free time, a shovel, and gloves.  You can volunteer for any day between August 9 until August 13 from 8 AM until 5 PM.  The Office will provide lunch, and we will organize carpooling to the archaeological site if you do not have transportation.

Here is the sign-up form: bit.ly/augustexcavation.

George Washington sponsored the Ox Roast to honor Mohican service in the Revolutionary War, only a few months before the colonists displaced the Stockbridge Mohicans from present-day Stockbridge, MA, part of the Mohican homelands since time immemorial.

Despite immense hardship and displacement, the Stockbridge-Munsee Community persists as a nation and currently resides in Wisconsin.  Members of the community have always returned to their homelands, and the Mohican Nation has a historic preservation office, located at Williams per an agreement with the college, to protect Mohican and Munsee cultural heritage sites and to repatriate ancestors and items of cultural significance.
