YMCA MENTORING PROGRAM

Mentors Wanted:

Work with 8th graders at the YMCA/Roots Teen Center

SOPHOMORES, JUNIORS AND SENIORS VOLUNTEER at an exciting new initiative at the Roots Teen Center on Eagle St in N. Adams, MA. We are looking for 4-5 Williams students who can collaborate with YMCA/Roots program coordinator to help design an after-school mentoring program for 8th graders from Drury High School.  The goal of the program is “to improve academic achievement, social competence and avoidance of problem, high risk behavior by providing a relationship with a caring adult who works to help youth achieve their potential.”

Williams College students will meet students students every Thursday afternoon from

January – May. Activities will include:

  • Regular ‘check-in’ and conversation topics chosen by students.
  • Games and activities provided by Roots
  • Food and cooking available
  • Homework and/or project work for school

Time Commitment:

Winter Study: program design/orientation and visit to Roots – 4 hrs

Second Semester: one day per week at Roots (Thursday) Leave Williams at 2 PM and return to campus by 4:15 PM.  Two Saturdays at the YMCA. One hour/week of prep or reflection with program coordinator at Williams.

Mentors will work with youth to enhance creative thinking and problem solving skills.  Williams students will be trained in: curriculum design, youth developmental assets and benefits of mentoring.

Transportation and other logistical support provided by CLiA. Ability to drive one’s own car  and others a plus!
