Writer and composer Dave Malloy describes his musical Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812 as an “electropop opera” that combines elements of rock, EDM, Russian Folk, and classical music with a healthy dose of old-school Musical Theatre. His unexpected and artful combination of styles helps to translate characters and situations from Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace for today’s audience in a stirringly relevant way. This production will combine Malloy’s eclectic, fast-paced music with dynamic, actor-generated movement and enthusiastic storytelling to communicate the larger questions the musical asks: What do we owe to each other in society? How do we protect the people we love? Is it possible to live a life of hope and meaning when surrounded by a violent, tumultuous world?
