The Covid era has presented us with an unprecedented restriction of our movements. At the same time, digital communication technologies enable us to maintain relationships and even foster new alliances across distances. Students at Williams College, USA, enrolled in THEA 101 “Introduction to Theatre and Performance” and THEA 284 “Global Digital Performance,” in partnership with students at Shiv Nadar University, India, enrolled in DNC 102 “The Dancer’s Body,” are currently exploring the personal and artistic possibilities of this historic moment as they create short works of digital performance. In the spirit of discovery, students are communicating across a variety of platforms and experimenting with uses of movement, sound, text, and still and video images in both narrative and abstract ways. Students from DNC 101, “Writing Bodies” at Shiv Nadar will be writing responses to the pieces. The project was conceived between Shanti Pillai, Asst. Prof. in the Dept. of Theatre at Williams, and Meghna Bhardwaj, Asst. Prof. in the Dept. of Art and Performing Art at Shiv Nadar. Also involved in this collaboration are Amy Holzapfel, Prof. of Theatre at Williams, and Marcel Zaes, a Ph.D. candidate in Music and Multimedia Composition at Brown University. This unique effort seeks to forge new ways of holding hands in solidarity, finding inspiration and creativity through changing circumstances.

Check back for the Zoom link.

Williams College students will present excerpts from the pieces for an invited audience on Tuesday, November 17 at 8 pm EST, while Shiv Nadar students will present on November 18 at 7 pm IST. The pieces will also be made accessible online in the latter half of November 2020.
