Celebrating 170 Years of Inching Up (On the Cheap)

Abstract:  Ask a bunch of math jocks, "What's your favorite theorem?" and you'll get responses such as: "There are infinitely many primes!", "The square root of 2 is irrational!", and even: "a^2 + b^2 = c^2 (at least for right triangles)!" But what about the behind-the-scenes theorems that don't get all the hype and twitter #HashTags? Here one number-theorist-turned-president will share his favorite non-famous theorem, its beauty, and far-reaching consequences. In fact, this masterpiece is exactly 170 years old—so this talk is really a birthday celebration for a theorem that transcends the rest. No number theory is required, but an average amount of basic calculus always helps. All math jocks are invited to attend.
