The Most Prime, Ideal, Lemma Ever (The Prime Avoidance Lemma) by Lily Napach ’25, Wednesday September 25, 1:00 – 1:50pm, North Science Building 113, Wachenheim, Mathematics Colloquium
A fundamental question in algebra is how rings relate to the ideals inside of them. The Prime Avoidance Lemma – an important lemma in commutative algebra – helps us understand how ideals, and prime ideals more specifically, live inside of rings. In this talk, we will work through the proof of the Prime Avoidance lemma and explore an example that shows us just how interesting (and ideal) the lemma is.
