WilliamsTheatre presents The Government Inspector by Nikolai Gogol, Russian writer and founder of critical realism in dramatic literature. This satiric masterpiece portrays a small town, paralyzed by news about the unexpected visit of an undercover inspector. The rumor terrifies officials and provokes their guilty consciences. Gogol’s amusing yet profound story is a grotesque peek at human nature. The new translation by Christopher English brings out unique vitality, humor and the everlasting moral wisdom of Gogol’s drama. This is the first production by Assistant Professor Omar Sangare, who joined the Department of Theatre in Fall 2006.
