In this lecture, Professor Evely Hu-DeHart explores the importance of Chinese contract laborers for the development of the Spanish Empire in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. Her work links the Pacific to the Atlantic and looks at the entwined historical processes of immigration and labor, race, class, gender, empires, and intersectionality by placing the Asian diaspora in conversation with the black and indigenous presence in the New World.
