Text Mining and Singular Value Decomposition in Amazon Customer Reviews by Casey DeLano '22

Text Mining and Singular Value Decomposition in Amazon Customer Reviews by Casey DeLano ’22, Statistics Colloquium, Wednesday, October 20, 1:10 – 1:50 pm, North Science Building 017

Abstract:  I begin by discussing why text mining is important as a field of study in statistics.  Using Amazon customer reviews as an example, I walk through one way of transforming text to numbers.  I explain singular value decomposition (SVD) as a dimensionality reduction technique to reduce a sparse term-document matrix to a dense matrix with a manageable number of columns for analyzing and describing textual data.
