Please join us for a film screening of the live solo performance of Rashida K. Braggs, Amber in the City of Light, followed by a discussion with Williams College colleagues.
Josephine Baker’s light shines bright in the history of jazz in Paris. Yet many Black women’s contributions remain in the shadows. In Amber in the City of Light: Act 1, Dr. Rashida K. Braggs weaves archival research, field notes and interviews into a solo multi-sensory performance to share Black womens’ experiences of migrating, surviving and performing jazz in the City of Light. Act 1 is just the beginning… the journey will continue with this ongoing performance.
This performance was made possible, in part, with support from the Davis Center, Willams College’s Office Institutional Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and the Dean of the Faculty’s Office.
This work was performed live at the United Solo Festival, hosted by Founder & Artistic Director Omar Sangare, on Saturday, October 19, 2024.
