Race, Gender, and Political Dissent: Latin American & Caribbean Film Today

The Latin American and Caribbean Film Festival, organized by the Department of Romance Languages, continues April 16 with director Jorge Thielen Armand screening his award-winning film. La Soledad/ The Solitude narrates an account of the Venezuelan crisis told through the real-life struggle of a young father trying to save his family from the demolition of their home. [In Spanish with English subtitles.]

"Combining sharp social critique with the offbeat poetry of magical realism, La Soledad offers an engaging portrait of the effects of economic catastrophe on individuals’ lives. Jorge Thielen Armand’s debut feature narrates his return to La Soledad, a house in Venezuela once inhabited by his great-grandparents and now threatened with demolition." Jorge Thielen-Armand is a Venezuelan director based in Toronto. In 2015 he founded La Faena with Rodrigo Michelangeli, a production company dedicated to art-house films.
