Optimal Tiles by Prof. Frank Morgan, Faculty Colloquium, today, 1 – 1:45 pm, Stetson Court Classroom 105
Abstract: In 2001 Thomas Hales proved that regular hexagons provide the least-perimeter way to tile the plane with unit areas. What is the best pentagonal tile? What about the hyperbolic plane, where the regular hexagon doesn’t tile, but regular k-gons do for all k > 6? The talk will include some recent results by undergraduates.
