NEDoT is a new collaborative of artists and venues from across the region coming together to spotlight some of the rich diversity of dance in New England.
Alexander and Joy Davis, The Davis Sisters, were mistaken for a married couple in 2015, and have been spending the last 5 years unsuccessfully trying to convince people that they are, in fact, related. Celebrated choreographers in their own right, this collaboration represents the intersection of physical rigor, theatrical structure, dramaturgical research, and glamour that both artists respect in the other. Junk Drawer; or the inherited utilitarian archive of the future was created with Eric Mullis and together their performance connects people to people, past to present, and memories to dreams.
Storied Places is an original re-imagining of experiences of migration (forced and voluntary)—with particular reference to black experiences across the diaspora. Through the intricate interplay of movement, music and text, the project explores points of departure and the imprints they leave across personal and global histories. The piece evokes the moving body as a site of history, memory, and departure. Its mediums include movement, text (both historical and original), scenography, and music. Storied Places is a Nicole Stanton Crossroads Production with the Jay Hoggard Quintet.
Subject:Matter is a Boston based tap dance company, under the direction of choreographer Ian Berg, with the aim of presenting new, cutting-edge tap dance work. Through Subject:Matter Berg examines how to blur the line between choreography and improvisation, audience and performer. How can inherited structures be challenged while still respecting the form and its masters?
While celebrating the dance of New England, NEDoT highlights dance artists in each community the tour performs. Joining the Berkshires performance, Williamstown’s Erica Dankmeyer presents two rarely seen historic dances by Jane Dudley, and Still Moving, a study of mutual muses Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe, created for RAWDance Co-Artistic Directors Wendy Rein and Ryan T. Smith.
Funded in part by the Expeditions program of the New England Foundation for the Arts, made possible with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, with additional support from the six New England state arts agencies.
