Modelling Sustainable Aphid Control Via Intercropping (Allen-Perkins & Estrada, 2019) by Arianna Gerig & Cortland McBarron ’25, Monday February 10, 1:00 – 1:50pm, North Science Building 113, Wachenheim, Mathematics Colloquium

Abstract: Agricultural losses to insects continue to be an increasingly important problem for the entire world.  Given the growing world population, decline in serviceable cropland, and changing climate, it is necessary to look at sustainable agricultural solutions to stop the propagation of pests.  Based on the work done by Allen-Perkins and Estrada in 2019, we will discuss a mathematical model that studies the effectiveness of different intercropping arrangements as a way to stop the spread of insect-borne disease.  This model provides evidence of a new arrangement which may act as a solution for pest management.
