The Williams College Department of Music presents Miranda Cuckson & Nunc on Friday, April 6 at 8 p.m. in Chapin Hall on the Williams College campus. Members of the ensemble offer a composition reading to talented Williams music students on Thursday April 5, at 4:15 p.m. in Brooks-Rogers Recital Hall. These free events are open to the public.

Miranda Cuckson and Nunc offer a glimpse into the music of now with the Piano Quartet (2016) by Harold Meltzer; L’heure bleue (2013) by Nina C. Young; Hypha (2013-14) by Sebastian Hilli; Timelash (2003, rev. 2016) by Christopher Bailey; and a world premiere by Williams composer Ileana Perez Velazquez, Lights of lives flowing through your eyes (2018).

The performers are Emi Ferguson, flute; Vasko Dukovski, clarinet; Blair McMillen, piano; Miranda Cuckson, violin (and director); Lois Martin, viola; John Popham, cello; and Carl Bettendorf, conductor.

Since its successful inaugural concert in 2007 in New York City – “these musicians are so thoroughly at home with [the repertory] that they made even the toughest of these works sing” (New York Times) – Nunc has presented distinctively curated programs of vividly juxtaposed music and given celebrated world and United States premieres by composers including Stefano Gervasoni, David Rakowski, Michael Hersch, Ileana Perez Velazquez, Diego Tedesco, David Fulmer, Jonathan Dawe and Ralph Shapey. In addition to self-producing events at diverse venues in New York, Nunc has performed as invited guest ensemble at National Sawdust in Brooklyn, the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, the Contempo series at University of Chicago, the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton University, Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Vanderbilt University in Nashville and Peabody Institute in Baltimore. In the summer of 2014, Nunc gave the acclaimed premiere of Michael Hersch’s opera On the Threshold of Winter at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

Nunc was founded by Artistic Director violinist Miranda Cuckson as an occasional concert series called “Transit Circle” (a type of telescope). It was renamed Nunc (the Latin word for “now”) and incorporated as a not-for-profit organization in 2012. Comprising a flexible collection of performers and artists, rather than a fixed ensemble roster, Nunc is devoted to presenting high-caliber performances of music and highlighting innovations and compositional contributions.

Nunc is presented by the Williams College Department of Music with the generous support of the W. Ford Schumann ’50 Performing Arts Endowment.
