Meet & Greet for Theatre Dept. Spring Production of Sometimes the Rain, Sometimes the Sea by Julia Izumi, dir. Kym Moore

The Theatre Dept. Invites you to join in meeting guest director Kym Moore on February 12th, 1-3pm in the Centerstage.

Sometimes the Rain, Sometimes the Sea is, in part, a play about the magic of storytelling. Why do we need stories? And what do we gain from telling them and listening to them? Actors in this piece must bring their wildest imaginations to the process and be ready to “play.” It is not a “realistic” play but one that expresses certain ‘truths’ about the human condition that are of vital importance to the creators. Themes of unrequited love and actual love will be explored, however, please consider these ideas of “love” as more than romantic. What does it mean to love anything or anyone truly? Actors in this piece must be eager to tell stories and to create an experience for an audience. And definitely be ready, willing, and able to have some fun!

KYM MOORE (Director/Educator/Theatremaker) is co-founder/co-artistic director of Antigravity Performance Project and Professor of Theatre Arts and Performance Studies at Brown University. She is an award-winning playwright and director with a broad range of aesthetic interests in theater and performance. If categorizing is necessary, she could be described as an Afro-Futurist. Moore’s directing style is grounded, imaginative and visually compelling. Her works are designed to reveal the multi-sensory, multi-dimensional, and mythic dimensions of reality. Her well-honed sense of craft and keen understanding of the materials of theater (actor, text, space, light, sound, etc.) elevates her work beyond the ordinary. In a recent production of Miss Julie (Chain Theatre, NYC) critic Natalie Rine, On Stage Blog, wrote “ . . . Moore’s direction is crisp and snappy with not a minute wasted. In (her) masterful hands, Miss Julie is a stirring invitation to wake up, an invigorating exploration of choice and consequence, gender and class, freewill and authority that will make you want to lean forward in your chair to not miss a beat.”
