Measuring the Centrality of U.S. Supreme Court Decisions by Grady Short ’23, Mathematics Colloquium, Monday, February 13, 1 – 1:45 pm, North Science Building 113, Wachenheim.

Abstract:  Scholars of network science have constructed various ways of measuring the centrality of nodes in networks, while it is in the interest of lawyers, judges, and legal scholars to understand and gauge the importance of various court decisions.  After reviewing and comparing different measures of network centrality, I walk through the methods and findings of a 2007 paper that applies an advance in Internet search theory to examine centrality in the network of U.S. Supreme Court cases and citations.
