Here Be Legendre Dragons: An Analysis of Paper Folding Diagrams Corresponding to Values of the Legendre Symbol by Grace Mabie ’19, Mathematics Senior Thesis Defense, Monday, April 29, 1 – 1:45 pm, Stetson Court Classroom 101

Abstract:  We examine patterns and symmetries of the Legendre Symbol with the help of paper folding diagrams. These diagrams, which we call Legendre Dragons, reveal properties of the Legendre Symbol through attributes which we have named area, slope, and diameter. We conjecture strict upper and lower bounds on the diameter of Legendre Dragons, which would reveal a new perspective on the randomness of the values of the Legendre Symbol for a given prime p.
