Predicting Overfishing and Collapse in Multispecies Fisheries by Maddy Mandyck ’23, Mathematics Colloquium, Wednesday, October 5, 1 – 1:45 pm, North Science Building 113, Wachenheim.
Abstract: Fisheries are a large part of the marine ecosystem and human existence overall. They provide direct employment for more than 200 million people and generate $70 billion in first sale fishery revenue, which is an important source of income for developing countries. However, a long history of overfishing has led to the depletion or collapse of many key species. Here we will develop a model to predict the threat of collapse for individual species with the end goal of extending the model to multiple species.
