DESCRIPTION:“The Good Will Hunting Problem: Cayley’s Formula for the Number of Trees” by Keith Grossman ’23\, Mathematics Colloquium\, Monday\, December 5\, 1 – 1:45 pm\, North Science Building 113\, Wachenheim. \nAbstract: The movie Good Will Hunting features a famous math scene where the protagonist\, Will Hunting\, solves two difficult problems that\, according to the movie\, took MIT professors “more than two years to prove”. The first of these problems was the formula for the number of labeled trees on n vertices\, known as Cayley’s Formula. We’ll give a bijective proof of Cayley’s Formula and provide ideas for alternative proof methods as well. \n
