James (Jim) Neumann, Williams ’84, is a Principal at Industrial Economics, Incorporated
Cambridge, MA, and specializes in climate change impact and adaptation analysis, applied
environmental economics, and policy analysis. He is a recognized expert on the economics of
climate change adaptation, with a particular specialty on sea-level rise and storm surge risks
associated with climate change; and is a Lead Author for the IPCC Fifth Assessment Working
Group II team and a lead author for the US National Climate Assessment coastal effects
chapter. His recent work includes support of the USEPA’s Office of Air and Radiation, Climate
Change Division, which includes new work to quantify risks of climate change to socially
vulnerable populations, through multi-sectoral routes of impact, and a report on health risks to
children. He is also currently working with three state governments to estimate climate change
impacts (New York, Massachusetts, and Delaware), including recommendations for adaptation
investment priority setting toward disproportionately affected socially vulnerable populations.
