Extending Pythagoras by Prof. Steven Miller, Mathematics Colloquium, Mathematics Colloquium, Monday, March 9, 1 – 1:45 pm, Stetson Court Classroom 101

Abstract:  The Pythagorean Theorem is a staple of mathematics.  The result has a long history, both in general and on campus (where James A. Garfield ’56 is credited with an original proof).  We’ll briefly review some proofs of this result and then launch into some arguments that are almost proofs, discuss what is needed to make them rigorous, and examine extensions of
this important result.
