Is Happiness Contagious?: An Answer Using Longitudinal Social Network Analysis by William Conyers ’21, Statistics Colloquium, Monday, October 26, 1:30 – 2:15 pm, Live – join with Google Meet: meet.google.com/okv-qdfg-fqd

Abstract: This talk will look at how happiness spreads through social networks. Using data from the Framingham Heart Study, we will apply generalized estimating equations to measure the impact being surrounded by happy people has on one’s own happiness. We will show that happiness spreads through induction, where people that are proximate to happy people tend to see their own happiness increase over time. We will also provide visualizations and numerical characterizations of the happiness network to better understand the underlying dynamics at play.
