Ian Balfour, Professor of English and of Social and Political Thought at York University, Toronto, has written and edited many books and essays on a wide variety of subjects: most prominently on Romantic poetry, on philosophy and particularly aesthetic theory, on Benjamin and other Frankfurt School figures, and on various forms of popular culture (film, music, TV). He has also co-edited with Eduardo Cadava a special issue of SAQ called The Claims of Human Rights, and was sole editor of another SAQ volume on Late Derrida. Balfour recently co-curated an exhibition at the Tate Britain on Hazlitt’s art criticism and related paintings. He is currently writing a book on the sublime, to which his upcoming lecture is related. His talk is sponsored by the English Department, The Class of 60’s Scholars and the Margaret Bundy Scott Fund. All are welcome to attend.
