Starting this Fall, the Muslim Chaplain and Muslim Student Union (MSU) are launching a speaker series called “Lived Islam” where Muslim guest speakers from a diaspora of life experiences will be visiting Williams to share a window of their lived experience of Islam on a Friday when they’ll be leading the Jumuah bayan/khutba followed by an evening event to engage the wider Muslim and non-Muslim community. We launch this series this Friday, October 4th, with our first khatib/speaker, Tayeb Sherif, who will be leading Jumuah and an evening study hadith (prophetic narrations) study circle or halaqa to understand the calamities and difficulties of today’s world through a prophetic reality. This is a space for all of us to come together as we study the words of our Beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in community with one another. Please see the flyer for more information and Mr. Sherif’s biography below. Everyone is welcome, including those who don’t identify as Muslim.

Tayeb Sherif was born and raised in London within a religious household who were frequently engaged in social issues. He was fortunate to meet many well-known Muslim activists, intellectuals, and scholars. He studied social and political sciences at Cambridge University and was also able to attend lectures on the history of Islamic thought. He has worked for a variety of companies and governmental agencies in the UK, Abu Dhabi, and the US. He is blessed with a wife and two daughters and lives in upstate NY where he has the opportunity to learn religious sciences from local scholars as well as to share knowledge and ideas with the community.

  • Evening event/spiritual study circle: 5-6 PM, Muslim Prayer Room
  • Followed by dinner beginning at 6 PM, Interfaith Common Room
