  • This event has passed.

This year is the 20th anniversary of the September 11th attacks on the United States. The most of the rising sophomores were born in 2001, meaning, none of the students and most of the younger faculty and staff have very little memory of this event. However, there are many people at Williams for whom this event is still a devastating moment. There has been many films about this event, most of them triggering and violent.

However, the film, “Man on a Wire” is a beautiful documentary about the 1974 high-wire walk of Philippe Petit between the Twin Towers. This film takes us back to a challenging time of New York’s history, which was the backdrop to this feat by Petit. The film shows the Twin Towers about a year after being built as the tallest buildings in the world. I found the film to be a beautiful memorial of the Twin Towers and a New York era that has faded into history while the city remains great and a magnet for adventurers and and travelers from all around the world.  Please come watch this movie; if you need a quiet place to be with others who still mourn the events around 9-11 or if you are someone who is curious and wants to learn more during the discussion about how this event changed the lives of so many people. Or, perhaps you are just looking for a good documentary. All are welcome.

Please come to the film and join us afterward for a time of reflection and discussion about how this event still shapes our world and our lives. Through reflection and discussion, we hope to remember the lives lost, the lives changed and the lessons taught and learned on this day by looking at a film that capture the optimism  and the beauty and the hope that was embodied in this unique New York experience.  For more information contact The Rev. Valerie Bailey Fischer at vb7@williams.edu.

Everyone is welcome — please wear masks and social distancing will be practiced in the theater.
