I/O New Music Fest 2021 presents Nightfall broadcast from the Bernhard Music Center as a livestream. LINK

I/O NEW MUSIC closes the 2021 Virtual I/O Fest with a livestream performance from inside and outside Chapin Hall. The concert begins on the steps of Chapin Hall as the sun sets and I/O New Music gives the world premiere of Nightfall by Hannah Gruendemann ‘20. The program resumes inside with Pauline Oliveros’s In Consideration of the Earth, John Adams’s Road Movies, and Tania León’s Pinceladas. Between performances we will hear a discussion between the student composers, performers, and conductors of I/O New Music about making music during the year of COVID, and a remembrance of I/O Fest co-founder Steven Dennis Bodner. I/O Fest 2021 closes the following morning at sunrise, on Cole Field, with Hannah Gruendemann’s Dawn.

I/O concludes the broadcast with a clip in the memory of Steven Bodner.

I/O Fest is the Williams College Department of Music’s annual festival of new and adventurous music.  In programs dedicated to presenting new voices, fresh perspectives, and novel approaches to creating music, I/O strives to offer visceral performances, innovative presentation, and immersive experiences for adventurous listeners.  I/O Fest 2021 is largely virtual, and was conceived in response to the challenging circumstances of the past year.  I/O has been a place for students, faculty, and alumni to develop creative responses to the current situation, exploring new temporalities and musical ecologies, and transforming limitations into new modes of performance and expression.  These programs reflect the interests of the musicians involved, acting as a platform for their creative ideas and a crucial vehicle for reaching the public, however indirectly, through music.  More than ever, I/O Fest has been a space for creating, sharing, and connecting through creative music making.
