The French Film Festival 2019 continues tonight with one short film, Maman(s) / Mothers(s) followed by Tomboy.

Maïmouna Doucouré, a French writer and filmmaker, reveals the complex nature of polygamy in Maman(s)/ Mother(s). Eight year old Aida lives in an apartment in the Parisian suburb. The daily life of Aida and the whole family is overwhelmed when her father comes back from Senegal, their country of origin, with a second wife. Aida, extremely sensitive to her mother’s distress, decides to take action to get rid of the newcomer. [In French and Wolof with English subtitles.]

In Tomboy French screenwriter and director Céline Sciamma explores the divide between sex and gender, and whether people are hard-wired or socially conditioned. [NYTimes] Ten-year old Laure is a tomboy. On her arrival to a new neighborhood, she lets a friendly girl, Lisa, believe that she is a boy simply by changing her name to Michael. Throughout the summer she assumes this new identity though not without unsettling complications. [In French with English subtitles.]

Our last film in the Transitions: Coming of Age French Film Festival 2019 will be Polina, danser sa vie / Polina by Valérie Müller and Angelin Preijoca, February 25.
