Fall Convocation is the ceremonial opening of the academic year. It celebrates the Senior Class and its many accomplishments and introduces six exceptionally accomplished Williams graduates who will receive Bicentennial Medals. All are welcome. Masks are encouraged indoors.
College Chaplains will open and close the ceremony. There will be welcoming remarks by President Maud Mandel and the Senior Class Marshals, as well as musical performances by members of the Senior Class. Dean Gretchen Long will present the Grosvenor Cup Award as well as the seniors elected to Phi Beta Kappa at the end of their junior year. We will end with a singing of The Mountains.
The Convocation address will be delivered by Adena Friedman ’91, Bicentennial Medalist. As president and CEO of Nasdaq, Friedman has shaped its transformation into a leading global exchange and technology solutions corporation. She has 30 years of experience at Nasdaq and The Carlyle Group and serves as a Class B director to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and on several boards, including the nonprofit FCLTGlobal. Other medalists in fall 2022: Dr. Elizabeth “Libby” Hohmann ’80, Pamela Council ’07, Katherine Krieg Fischer ’08, Anouk Dey ’09, and Lina Khan ’10.
Convocation Schedule, Saturday, September 10, 2022
- 10:15 a.m. Academic Procession lines up in Frosh Quad
- 10:40 a.m. Academic Procession begins
- 11:00 a.m. Program begins in Chapin Hall
Convocation takes place in Chapin Hall. The program lasts about an hour. An all-campus picnic follows on Chapin Lawn. (Dining halls will be closed for lunch.) The ceremony will be recorded and posted on Williams YouTube after the event.
