Eph Zen Teachers: Panel with Ken Kessel '74 and Chuck Hotchkiss '69 (Hopkins 001)
Tue, January 28th, 2025
4:30 pm - 6:00 pm
- This event has passed.

All are invited to a panel discussion with two Williams alums who’ve gone on to be Zen teachers: Zen Master Jok Um (Ken Kessel ’74) and Rev. Kanzan Jishin-sensei (Chuck Hotchkiss ’69). Learn about Zen Buddhism and hear their stories of how they became Zen teachers (at least one of them first learned about Zen during Winter Study!). Prof. Bernie Rhie will moderate the discussion.
Time and location: Tuesday, January 28, 4:30-6pm in Hopkins 001 (one of the Socratic classrooms in the basement of Hopkins Hall).
This event is sponsored by the Chaplain’s Office and is open to the public, not just the Williams community. All are welcome!
About the panelists: Zen Master Jok Um (Ken Kessel ’74) began studying with Zen Master Seung Sahn in 1975 and received transmission to teach in April 2017. He is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a psychotherapist, specializing in infant and early childhood mental health. The Reverend Kanzan Jishin-sensei (Chuck Hotchkiss ’69) is a lineage holder in four lines of Japanese Zen, having completed Dharma Transmission with Shindo Jim Nowik of the White Plum Asanga. He is an artist/educator, who seeks out ways to bind his Zen practice and teaching with woods-going and community-oriented applications of the creative process.
