Senior Theatre Major Casey York (Sweeney Todd, A New Brain) directs Ariel Dorfman’s political thriller Death and The Maiden, set in an unnamed country that has just given itself a Democratic government after a long period of violence and dictatorship. The play dives deeply into the open wounds of torture survivor Paulina Salas (Lauren Young ’10) and her husband Gerardo Escobar (Jonathan Draxton ’12), a successful lawyer on the President’s Commission to investigate crimes committed by the previous military regime. When a good samaritan, Doctor Roberto Miranda (Mike Leon ’11), gives Gerardo a ride home, Paulina recognizes his voice from fifteen years ago. Convinced of his guilt, she seeks truth, justice, and closure. This riveting drama asks how can you save a marriage after irreparable trauma? How can you rebuild a country after unspeakable violence? What is the nature of truth and justice?
