Curatorial Close Looks: Destinee Filmore on ‘Emancipation’

Conceived as a commemoration of the 160th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, Emancipation: The Unfinished Project of Liberation visualizes what freedom looks like for Black Americans today and the legacy of the Civil War today and beyond. Highlighting the perspectives of contemporary Black artists, Emancipation features commissioned and recent works by Sadie Barnette, Alfred Conteh, Maya Freelon, Hugh Hayden, Letitia Huckaby, Jeffrey Meris, and Sable Elyse Smith. The seven installations span sculpture, photography, and paper and textile fabrications. The exhibition is on view through July 14.
Destinee Filmore is an Assistant Curator in the Modern and Contemporary Art department at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 2023, she received an MA in Art History from Williams College, and she held the position of Mellon Curatorial Fellow at WCMA between 2021 and 2024. She attended Spelman College and holds a B.A. in Art History. In 2021, she completed the Mellon Undergraduate Curatorial Fellowship at the High Museum of Art, and she has previously held fellowships and internships at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the High Museum of Art.
