SUMMARY:Conway’s Zero Irrelevancies Proof by Isabel Bushway ’23\, Mathematics Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Conway’s Zero Irrelevancies Proof by Isabel Bushway ’23\, Mathematics Colloquium\, Wednesday\, October 12\, 1 – 1:45 pm\, North Science Building 114\, Wachenheim. \nAbstract: The Classification Theorem is a proof which describes all proofs using crosscaps and handles on spheres. The proof in most textbooks is by Seifert and Threlfall\, which requires that all surfaces be brought into a very standard form. Conway created a proof that rids the proof of this standard form\, or this “irrelevancy”\, hence Conways’ Zero Irrelevancy Proof. Here we will walk through this new proof. \n
