Conway’s Zero Irrelevancies Proof by Isabel Bushway ’23, Mathematics Colloquium, Wednesday, October 12, 1 – 1:45 pm, North Science Building 114, Wachenheim.

Abstract:  The Classification Theorem is a proof which describes all proofs using crosscaps and handles on spheres.  The proof in most textbooks is by Seifert and Threlfall, which requires that all surfaces be brought into a very standard form. Conway created a proof that rids the proof of this standard form, or this “irrelevancy”, hence Conways’ Zero Irrelevancy Proof.  Here we will walk through this new proof.
