The Unseen Sequence explores India’s classical dance tradition through one dedicated disciple, Malavika Sarukkai, whose form is rooted in tradition but imbued with a uniquely contemporary sensibility. As an interpreter of Bharatanatyam’s rhythmic and expressive potential, she serves as guide through the film’s investigation of an ancient art that has evolved from temple dance to court entertainment to secular spectacle. Beautifully shot in temples and sacred sites, the film blends interviews, historic footage, and performance to create a consummate overview of Bharatanatyam’s past, present, and future. 69 min.
