The Williams College Department of Music presents the Chinese Music Ensemble performing in Brooks-Rogers Recital Hall at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6. This free event is open to the public.
Williams newest music ensemble is composed of five talented music students and ensemble director, Mr. Wang Guowei. “We hope to introduce the vitality and rich variety of Chinese music to the students and community of Williams College and beyond.”
Among the Chinese instruments featured on this concert will be the erhu, zheng, dizi, hulusi, liuqin, Chinese percussion, and piano. The group will perform pieces from various parts of China. Featured are folk songs displaying colorful regional characteristics from Canton, Hebai and Xinjiang. Thunder in a Drought highlights the music of Canton. Fisherman’s Song is performed on the hulusi which is often referred to as “phoenix tail bamboo”. Where the Water lies is a pop song arranged for piano and Chinese instruments.
