Williams Chamber Choir explores the exquisite acoustics of the Williams College Museum of Art under the direction of Lindsay Pope.

The Williams Chamber Choir, directed by Lindsay S. Pope, Visiting Director of Choral/Vocal Activities, performs music in the spirit of the spring season and of creation and renewal. With a diverse and dynamic repertoire for adult treble voices, Williams Chamber Choir features classic and contemporary works by Dana Maiben, David Lang, Tomás Luis de Victoria, Charlotte Botha, Abbie Betinis, Hannah Gruendemann ’20, Veljo Tormis, and folk song arrangements from Bulgaria, Republic of Georgia, and North America.

The choir addresses the theme of renewal with a triptych of works. The first part, Vermont by Boston-based composer Dana Maiben, is set to Emily Dickinson’s poem, I dwell in Possibility. The second work on this theme is David Lang’s evening morning day, which sets the nouns from Genesis, Chapter 1 to music, creating a meditative, clock-like representation of nature’s unfolding. Finally, Duo Seraphim, by Spanish Renaissance composer Tomás Luis de Victoria, paints a celebratory picture of creation’s completion.

Following are two canons—by living composers Charlotte Botha and Abbie Betinis—about important life transitions, titled Now, to the Moon and Be Like the Bird. Next, the choir presents a world premiere by student composer Hannah Gruendemann ’20, Madonna of the Evening Flowers. Next the choir offers Spring Sketches by Estonian composer Veljo Tormis, which contains six short vignettes depicting various aspects of the natural world during spring. The performance closes with music inspired by folk traditions: a Bulgarian classic, Kafal sviri, the Georgian work song Akhalalo namgalo, and an American folk song, Saro.
