Alexander Bevilacqua, Assistant Professor of History, will present his new book, The Republic of Arabic Letters: Islam and the European Enlightenment. Drawing on sources gathered in seven countries and six languages, The Republic of Arabic Letters explains how,
in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, a pioneering community of Christian scholars laid the groundwork for the modern Western understanding of Islamic civilization. Such luminaries as Voltaire and Edward Gibbon not only assimilated the factual content of this research but wove its interpretations into the fabric of Enlightenment thought. The event will be followed by a book signing and reception.
