The Williams College Department of Music presents the Berkshire Symphony in concert on Friday, October 21, at 8 p.m. in Chapin Hall on the Williams College campus. There is a pre-concert talk with conductor Ronald Feldman at 7:15 p.m. in Brooks-Rogers Recital Hall, adjacent to the main venue. These events are free and open to the public.

The Berkshire Symphony’s first concert of the season is an all-American affair, with three favorites by Copland, Ives, and Bernstein. Aaron Copland’s classicHoe-Down” from the ballet Rodeo captures a spirit of vivacity that has proved irresistible for audiences and copy-cats alike since its debut in 1942. Symphony No. 3 “The Camp Meeting” by Charles Ives preceded “Hoe-Down” by 38 years and is of a different character. But, both Ives and Copland share a certain energy and sense of wry humor. Closing out the program is Leonard Bernstein’s iconic Symphonic Dances from West Side Story. Bernstein offers a grittier and more urban side of the American experience, but more than a few listeners will find the need to suppress the urge to sing along, at least in concert. This concert of the Berkshire Symphony offers a live experience, dynamic performance, in a peerless performance venue.
