This Winter Study, we’ll be developing a play about Williams College in the years after World War II, when Sondheim was a student here, and the college’s demographics shifted dramatically. Williams began to transform from an institution that unquestioningly perpetuated white patriarchal privilege to one that confronted difficult questions about its purpose, its values, and who belongs. By challenging its traditional systems, Williams became a stage for this country’s ideological conflicts.

Although many of the characters in this story are white men, that won’t reflect our cast. To paraphrase what’s been said about “Hamilton,” this is the story of Williams then told by Williams now. We’re looking for students interested in thinking and talking about the spirit of this place, and taking the long view of an institution almost as old as America itself.

This will be an exploration of who we are today—have your say!

This Winter Study course will be an opportunity not only to workshop a new play, but also to learn how to prepare yourself for the stage.

Students have the option to sign up to participate in our Winter Study workshop without auditioning for the Spring 2020 production.
Last chance registration is November 20-24 (Seniors: Wednesday, November 20 @ 12:00 am – Sunday, November 24 @ 11:59 pm; All other students: Thursday, November 21 @ 12:00 am – Sunday, November 24 @ 11:59 pm).
