Anticipating Catastrophic Tipping Points by Ana María Picó ’22, Mathematics Colloquium

Anticipating Catastrophic Tipping Points by Ana María Picó ’22, Mathematics Colloquium, Wednesday, January 19, 2:30 – 3:15 pm, North Science Building 017, Wachenheim

Abstract:  Systems modeled by differential equations have been shown to exhibit consistent patterns in various conditions. These patterns occur when the system’s trajectory approaches critical points in catastrophic bifurcations.  Upon examination, these patterns seem to indicate an upcoming tipping point in the system’s state.  This talk aims to explain models that have been created with the hopes of being able to identify these aforementioned patterns in advance of a catastrophic event.
