CANCELED DUE TO ILLNESS
Poet, playwright, teacher, mentor, activist, warrior. All these roles describe Sonia Sanchez, who believes in writing as both a personal and political act and who raises her voice in the name of black culture, civil rights, and women’s liberation. She is among the earliest poets to incorporate urban black English into her written works, as well as one of the first activists to secure the inclusion of African American studies in university curricula. She is an inspiration and mentor to many young poets and Hip-Hop artists. Musician Talib Kweli says: “She opened the door for everything we do.”
Sponsored by the Program in Africana Studies.
