DESCRIPTION:A Friendly Introduction to Descriptive Set Theory by Prof. Jenna Zomback\, Williams College\, Mathematics Colloquium\, Wednesday\, June 29\, 1 – 1:45 pm\, North Science Building 113\, Wachenheim \nAbstract: Descriptive set theory (DST) combines techniques from analysis\, topology\, set theory\, combinatorics\, and other areas of math to study definable (typically Borel or measurable) subsets of Polish spaces. We will explore how DST can be used to think locally/pointwise inside of a continuum-sized space\, while still making sure our constructions are definable. As an example\, I will introduce one of the problems that the “Commutative algebra” SMALL group is currently thinking about. \n
