2023 German-Austrian Film Festival

The German-Austrian Film Festival in its 8th edition will take place on three consecutive Tuesdays at 7:00 PM on
April 11, April 18, and April 25 at Images Cinema located at 50 Spring St. in Williamstown.
This year, the festival has a focus on “Contemporary Queer Cinema from Germany & Austria.”
By presenting three very recent films by and/or about members of the LGBTQIA+ community in German and Austrian societies, the series explores how Queer cinema offers different accounts of the German-speaking world, invents an original visual language outside of cinematic conventions, and proposes new theories of what it means to be queer in Germany and Austria today.

In post-war Germany, liberation by the Allies does not mean freedom for everyone. Hans is repeatedly imprisoned under Paragraph 175, which criminalizes homosexuality. Over the decades, he develops an unlikely bond with his cellmate Viktor.

An Austrian woman escapes from the pressure of running her family’s vineyard by playing ice hockey. Then a new player arrives to challenge her rigid worldview, leading to a life-changing night on the streets of Vienna.
—April 25, 2023 at 7:00PM: Futur Drei/No Hard Feelings (2020) by Faraz Shariat.
Second-generation Irani-German Parvis works at a refugee shelter where he meets brother and sister Irani refugees and develops a tenuous romance with the brother as his friends attempt refugee status.
All films are in German with English subtitles. The screenings are free and open to the public.
